Track Repair Work
Tren Urbano Rail System

San Juan, Puerto Rico

Client/Owner: Alternative Concepts, Inc. (ACI) for Tren Urbano
14,000 Concrete Cross Ties
1,300 Wood Crossties
30 Yard Turnouts
About This Project
When Tren Urbano's concrete railroad crossties began to exhibit signs of failure, ACI, the transit system's operating authority, consulted with, and subsequently retained, LM Heavy Civil Construction, LLC (LMH) to deliver important track system upgrades and repairs. The project involved replacement of approximately 14,000 faulty crossties with new concrete crossties on the system's Mainline, and replacement of 1,300 wood crossties and all associated timber with new, creosote and borate-treated, oak ties at 30 Yard turnout locations. The work also included trackbed reshaping and grading, installation of ballast trackbed drainage, removal/disposal of surplus material (including old crossties) to an approved local facility; and surfacing/aligning of all associated track and switches (to re-establish vertical and horizontal alignment). Mainline work adjacent to third rail was preformed during off service hours, and monitored using stringent LMH lock-out procedures for track under work at any given time. All work was preformed without closure to transit, revenue service operations.
